Improvement of Broiler Growth Performance by Feeding Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) Flower Meal

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Butterfly pea flower meal (BPFM) on broiler performance.
Materials and Methods: A hundred day-old chicks (DOC) of the CP707 strain, with an initial body weight of 42.78 ± 3.50 g, were randomly divided into five treatments and five replications, with four chicks each. The treatments included BPFM0 = basal diet (BD), BPFM1 = BD + 1% BPMF, BPFM2 = BD + 2% BPFM, BPFM3 = BD + 3% BPFM, and BPFM4 = BD + 4% BPFM. The observed variables were broiler performance, total coliform, and the relative weights of internal organs and lymphoid.
Results: The results showed that feeding BPFM was able to increase the body weight gain and reduce the feed intake, resulting in more efficient feed conversion (p < 0.05). The Butterfly pea flower meal also suppressed the deposition of abdominal fat, and the total coliform bacteria in the ileum (p < 0.05). In addition, the size of the Fabricius bursa and lympha remained stable, while the thymus indicated a significant increase (p < 0.05). However, the dietary inclusion of BPFM did not affect the relative weight of internal organs (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: The addition of BPFM to the basal diet improve the productivity of broiler chickens, with the best level of Butterfly pea meal treatment at 4% (BPFM4).
