Redefining toughness in entrance examinations in India: medicine as a lifelong assessment

Abstract
Medicine represents the most enduring form of competitive assessment in India, as it requires repeated high-stakes examinations and continuous academic renewal across one’s entire professional lifespan. This article examines on how medical professionals continuously prove their competence and credibility in every phase of their life. Competitive exams such as Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) and Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) in India are entry level and are often celebrated as among the toughest entrance examinations. Yet medicine demands something special and rarer — the ability to remain academically competitive across one’s entire lifetime.[1,6] From preparing for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test–Undergraduate(NEET-UG) in late adolescence, medical training progresses through multiple stages. Doctors later face NEET-PG in their mid-20s and early 30s, followed by NEET-SS, often while balancing clinical responsibilities, family commitments, and fatigue. Doctors repeatedly re-enter examination halls while balancing service, family and fatigue.
