Assessment of Knowledge of Identification and Management of Vaso-vagal Syncope Among Dentist In Nigeria: a Crossectional Study

Abstract
Aim: To Assess the knowledge of identification and management of vaso-vagal syncope among dentists in Nigeria.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted over 6 months (July 2024 to January 2025). After obtaining ethical approval, participants consented and were recruited using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 2 domains, one with 10 questions and the other with 8 questions. The total score for each domain was obtained and then categorized as low (less than or equal to 50%), fair (51 to 69%), and, good (70% and above). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.
Results: A total of 132 participants completed the questionnaire and there were 73 (55.3%) males and 59 (44.7%) females. Most of the respondents 114 (86.4%) were in the age range of 21 – 40 years. The results revealed that only 45.5% of respondents had received recent training on handling medical emergencies, including syncope management, in the last two years. The overall knowledge scores for syncope identification and management were 76.3% and 83.0% respectively, rated as "Good".
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that while Nigerian dentists exhibit a good level of knowledge regarding vaso-vagal syncope, critical gaps persist, particularly in symptom recognition and emergency response. The findings highlight the urgent need for structured and continuous medical emergency training within the dental profession. Enhancing emergency preparedness through periodic training and standardized guidelines will ultimately improve patient safety and outcomes in dental settings.
