THE COMPARATIVE STUDY FOR THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF KETOPROFEN AND DIACEREIN IN OSTEOARTHRITIS OF KNEE JOINTS

Abstract
Objective: Osteoarthritis is a prevalent arthritis that significantly impacts quality of life. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of Diacerein, a disease-modifying agent, with Ketoprofen, a symptomatic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in osteoarthritis patients.
Methodology: The Comparative observational study has been performed on total 60 patients (4 withdrawn) suffering from mild to moderate Osteoarthritis of knee joint were included from orthopedic ward of Chaudhary Muhammad Akram Hospital Lahore. 28 patients received Diacerein cream (1%w/w) and 28 patients were given Ketoprofen cream (1% w/w) for 15 days and patient responses were measured using VAS and Lequesne index, before and after drug treatment. Patient consents were obtained and ADRS were evaluated.
Results: The VAS Scale was reduced from 7.321 ± 0.9449 to 4.75 ± 1.146 (Mean± SD) for Diacerein cream and 6.821 ±1.1564 to 4.321±1.1564 for Ketoprofen cream. The Lequesne scale was reduced from 6.0±1.054 to 4.21±1.0923 for Diacerein and 6.0±0.8819 to 3.839±1.0475 for Ketoprofen cream. Difference in VAS and Lequesne scale between the Diacerein and Ketoprofen were 0.757 and 0.099 respectively (p >0.05). There was not any Adverse Event reported.
Conclusion: Both the drugs, Diacerein and Ketoprofen creams were individually and equally effective and safe in Osteoarthritis.
