Basal cell adenocarcinoma of parotid gland: a case report of a rare salivary gland neoplasm

Abstract
Neoplasms of the salivary gland are very rare, have an indolent presentation and, therefore, may follow long term clinical course. Both major and minor salivary glands are affected in this dysplastic transformation (overall, the most affected glands are parotids) and are managed primarily by surgery followed by adjuvant radiation therapy, chemotherapy or both. In this case report, we present a case of basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) of right parotid gland in a 60-year-old female from north India. Contrast enhanced MRI of the face and neck was obtained which revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass lesion in right anterior aspect of parotid gland of 3 cm in the greater axis with one lymph node 1 cm in the short axis in right level II area of neck. FNAC of the mass revealed, characteristics of salivary gland neoplasm, typically of adenocarcinoma variety. After diagnosis, patient was taken up for radical surgery- superficial parotidectomy and histopathological examination of the post operative tissue sample revealed it as basal cell adenocarcinoma. The patient is recurrence free and is on close follow up at our department.
